The Prep S Garden Centre
Learning through negotiated play and real-life experiences is very important during the Prep year. Prep S has begun the year by setting up a Nursery and Café in the home corner. This resulted from a parent offering to plant strawberry runners with the class

From that simple activity, children demonstrated a keen and continued interest in a garden. The Nursery and Café was born! Children worked together to create the space and items that they thought would be evident in a nursery. We then organised an excursion to Sauer’s to purchase seedlings for our Nursery, and to examine the way their shop was designed.

Seeds and seedlings were planted, labels created and the Nursery was born! The pots are thriving outside our classroom and we intend to use some of our own produce for cooking at a later date.

This has led naturally into an examination of seeds, living and non-living things, life cycles and growth in general. Jack and the Beanstalk is our favourite story at the present time!
There are ample opportunities to develop literacy and numeracy skills through these investigations and activities. We are always very busy in Prep S!
